Chelonia (tortoises and turtles)
Chelonia (tortoises and turtles)
There are approximately 230 species of Chelonia. These animals are not as widespread as snakes or lizards, but they are still found in most of the world's temperate or warm environments.
Chelonia are characterized by their shells. These are formed by enlarged bony plates. When grouped together, these form a tough protective shell for the Chelonia to live in.
The diet of tortoises usually consists of plant matter along with the occasional supplement of carrion, although this varies from species to species, some Chelonia preferring plant matter, while some prefer carrion (mainly fish).
